Periodontic

Periodontal (gum) maintenance or supportive therapy focuses on the prevention and return of gum disease. Beginning with the initial visit, the periodontist will take time with you to assess your periodontal health by examining your dental and medical history.  This will help to ensure that you are receiving the best and safest treatment for your needs.

Periodontists are specialized dentists who have completed additional education in order to be able to prevent, diagnose, and treat gum disease.  They keep up to date with the latest and best treatments available for their patients and generally treat the most complex cases.  These specialized dentists also have training in cosmetic periodontal procedures.

During your first visit, the periodontist will examine your mouth, gums, and teeth.  Everything from tooth looseness, receding gums, and bite will be examined to determine your dental health.  X-rays may also be taken at this time to examine areas not seen by the naked eye.

During maintenance therapy, the mouth will again be examined, tartar and plaque will be removed, and teeth will be polished.  Maintenance treatment is important because it can help to prevent further oral inflammation, damaged tissue, or issues with dental implants.
